For nearly half of the returning Royals’ softball team, the memories of last year’s Championship run still burns fresh in their mind. What burns hotter is the sting of falling just short of the title. For the rookies and fresh faces, the passion to prove themselves is more than evident, and they have some great role models to show them the way.
Returning to lead the team this year from the pitching circle is First team All-Star Keeley Ainge. Alongside her is fellow captain and First team All-Star catcher, Jordan Britten-Yung. Also returning to the team are Second team All-Stars Laura Baldry, Daniella Vilio, and Michaela Moore. To deepen the veteran presence on the squad, head coach Michelle Peters has brought in a couple of transfers. Jesse Goddard joins the Royals in the pitching circle this year, providing a wealth of experience and depth. In the outfield will be Kolby Hamilton. Her lighting speed, fast reflexes, and big swing are a welcome addition to the Royals squad.
After much anticipation, the Royals will open their season with a double header against the Bellevue Bulldogs. Bellevue got the best of the Royals during the regular season, finishing ahead of them in the standings by a few points. But it was the Royals that had the last laugh as they sent the Bulldogs packing in the NWAC Championships.
Now the Bulldogs will have the chance to avenge their loss. It’s bound to be a heated affair with plenty of highlight reel worthy plays. Like the Royals, the Bulldogs will be playing their first games of the season. They have had an excellent preseason, showing that they can still play both sides of the game. The Royals are going to need to be on top of their game.
The preseason for the Royals has gone just as smooth, if not smoother. The team travelled to Arizona where they gave the locals a taste of Canadian softball talent. With both teams looking sharp, and injuries and fatigue no longer a factor, it’s going to be interesting to see who comes out on top of this one.
