The Douglas College Royals women's basketball team won their fifth straight game last Friday defeating the Capilano University Blues 73-66 in a close matchup that ended in overtime.
In the first quarter, the Royals were down 8-7 at one point but two three pointers by second-year guards Shelvin Grewal and Brittany Dorbin would help the Royals take the first quarter 13-10.
In the second quarter, the Royals started to open the gap to lead by as much as ten points. A big reason for that was because of their leading scorer and 4th highest scorer in the PACWEST conference, second-year guard Sidney Fraess. Fraess scored 7 of her 10 first-half points in the second, which assisted the Royals in finishing the half with the 28-21 lead.
However, it was in the third quarter where the Blues offense picked up the pace as consistent scoring throughout the quarter and six unanswered points at the end helped the Blues outscore the Royals 24 to 11 in the third, taking it 45-39.
A run capped by a Hailey Van Roekel three brought the Royals back into the game cutting 10-point deficit early in the fourth. The Royals three-point heroics would not stop there as Van Roekel would hit another three pointer late in the quarter to tie it up at 55. Capilano then re-took the lead and were up by three, but in the last fifteen seconds of the quarter second-year guard Cassandra Brinn hit a game tying bank-three that would rock the crowd and send this game to overtime.
In overtime, the Blues would not re-gain the lead as this time it was first year guard Sierra Gallego's two shots from beyond the arc that helped the Royals. Gallego would then finish the game with a season-high fifteen points closing off the Blues 73-66.
The Royals finish off the semester in third place with a 5-2 record, their next home game will be on Saturday January 11th against the VIU Mariners.
