Royals down Mariners for Bronze finish

The Douglas College Royals win the 2019-20 PACWEST Provincial bronze medal as they comeback to defeat the VIU Mariners 3-2.

The Royals player of the game was awarded to Matt Shand who finished with 22 kills. The PACWEST player of the year Max Haronga finished with 16 kills and six digs.

Although the Royals led 5-0 to start the game, the Mariners ended up taking the first set, after both teams were tied at 19, a 6-1 run secured them the set 25-20.

The Mariners momentum continued as a 7-1 lead to start the second set helped them open a gap too wide for the Royals to close, taking it 25-13.

The tables then turned in the Royals favour, as Reid Marriott's set point secured the Royals a 25-22 win.

Then the Royals took the fourth set as well as a six-point lead midway through helped them keep the lead throughout the set, helping them taking it 25-21.

Ultimately, the Royals secured their 11th PACWEST Provincial bronze medal as Marriott's set point secured the Royals the fifth set 15-13.

The Mariners player of the game was awarded to rookie Dario De Queiroz-Periera who finished with 14 kills and four digs

The Royals have now picked up medals in six of the last seven PACWEST provincial tournaments. The last time they took home the bronze was in 2017-18 when they defeated the Capilano University Blues 3-1.
