2019-20 Douglas College Royals Men's Volleyball Recruiting Class

Matthew Shand

High School: College Heights Secondary School
Hometown: Prince George, BC
Why did you choose Douglas College: Douglas College has a great volleyball program and I get to play with my brother, Ben Shand.
What are your goals for next year: Stay injury free for an entire season, win provincial championship, and get recognition and the end of the season
Coach's Thoughts: "We're excited for Matt to join his brother Ben and the rest of our Royals program this year.  Matt fits our program values and style play incredibly well. He's a driven competitor and as proven winner.  He's developed into arguably the top outside hitter in the province, recently leading PGYVC to a Volleyball BC  Provincial Championship, where he was also named MVP. I'm confident that Matt will continue his growth with our program next year, and compete immediately to make an impact with our program."

Ben Schill

High School: Earl Marriott Secondary
Hometown: South Surrey, BC
Why did you choose Douglas College: I chose because I felt it had the right programs for what I am wanting to peruse after post secondary. I also felt that they had a strong group of guys on their volleyball team.
What are your goals for next year: My goals are to get better with every practice and game and to enhance my volleyball skills.
Coach's Thoughts: "The Schill name is no stranger to the Royals program as his sister Emma Schill is a current member of the Royals WVB and his father Al is an alumni of Royals MVB. He joins our program as one of the most versatile athletes in our recruiting class, with the ability to contribute in 3 different positions. Ben flew under the radar in this class, and we're excited he's chosen to join the royals. It's a great fit, and we are excited to help him develop into an impact player in the PACWEST."

Elijah Kim

High School: Richmond Christian
Hometown: Richmond, BC
Why did you choose Douglas College: I chose Douglas for the Sports science program, enjoy playing under Travis, strong volleyball team
What are your goals for next year: Being a supportive teammate, consistent sets, improving vertical jump
Coach's Thoughts: "Elijah is a significant recruit for our program. Elijah is a setter that exhibits a cool calm confidence when leading his offence, has a knack to exploit mismatches vs his opponents and deliver consistent balls on the run. He reminds me quite a bit of current 5th year setter and captain Jared Collin, and we're excited for Elijah to learn from him and challenge him day in and day out. No question, our offense is in good hands for years to come with Elijah joining our program."

Nolan William Minck

High School: College heights secondary school
Hometown: Prince George, BC
Why did you choose Douglas College: I was recruited for volleyball and I have friends currently attending college at Douglas
What are your goals for next year: Rookie of the year
Coach's Thoughts: "Nolan is a natural fit for our program as he is the 5th athlete with our program from Prince George, playing for both PGYVC and College Heights secondary. He's a crafty outside hitter, with a knack for scoring in all types of situations. We expect Nolan to continue to be a threat from the baseline and at the net, and expect him to continue to find creative ways to score in the PACWEST."

Elijah St. Germain

High School: Seaquam Secondary School
Hometown: Surrey, BC
Why did you choose Douglas College: I chose Douglas College because I know their volleyball program has become very strong in the past couple years and I believe the program will continue to succeed. I also know a majority of the team through previous years of volleyball so I am excited to be joining this team.
What are your goals for next year: My goals for next season are to continue developing my skills as a libero and work on being a leader on and off the court.
Coach's Thoughts: "Elijah is no stranger to big time games and impressive accolades. He has played in a ton of high pressure environments with both Seaquam Secondary and FVVC programs, and was name the top libero at the BC HS Championships. This experience will be crucial as he joins our strong group of returning libero's. I'm looking forward to having his experience in our gym and him raising our compete level daily."

Gavin Payne

High School: Delta Secondary
Hometown: Ladner, BC
Why did you choose Douglas College: I chose Douglas College because of their great volleyball and sports science programs
What are your goals for next year: My goals for next season are to improve my volleyball skills
Coach's Thoughts: "Gavin continues the strong history of Delta Secondary grads to join the Royals MVB program. Gavin's consistency and blue collar work ethic will improve our gym immediately, and fit in with our current group of Royals. He brings a cool demeanor on the court, and has a natural platform in reception that will solidify our reception line. He's been coached the past season by long time assistant coach and alumni Andrew Robson, so we expect it to be a smooth transition from high school to our group."
