Blues upset Royals in PACWEST clash

The Capilano University Blues advance to tomorrow afternoon's semi-final matchup against the second seed Camosun Chargers after defeating Douglas College Royals 3-2.

Capilano outside-hitters Daphiny Kung, PACWEST all-rookie first team all-star Eve Nagata, and PACWEST first team all-star and Capilano player of the game Meghan Koven each finished with 11 kills. Capilano second-year middle-blocker Jaylene Lucas finished with 14 kills.

The Royals kicked off the game on a strong note as an 11-5 lead in the first set caused the Blues to call a timeout and regroup. Nevertheless, Douglas's momentum continued as a 14-5 run would secure them the first set 25-10.

Capilano then returned the favour in the second as an early 9-4 lead morphed into a nine-point gap midway through the set, which was ultimately too much for Douglas to come back from as the Blues took the second set 25-18.

The third set then saw each team battle as the score went back and forth.

After the game was tied at 14, the Royals were the ones who broke out as a 9-5 run locked in the third set 25-19 for Douglas.

The Blues then once again returned the favour as after both teams were tied at three, Capilano outscored Douglas 22-11 to take the 4th set 25-14.

Capilano's momentum continued as they went on a 7-1 run to start the 5th set.

The Blues lead showed to be too much of a gap for the Royals come back and went on take the set 15-6 and secure a spot in the semi-finals.

Royals third year outside hitter Emma Schill finished as Douglas player of the game award after racking up 11 kills and 16 digs.

The Blues will now take on the second seed Camosun Chargers Friday afternoon at 12:30pm.
