The Douglas College Royals Women's Volleyball team kicked off the season with two solid wins against the Capilano University Blues in an away and home match-up.

Friday nights contest saw the Royals come out on top in the race to 3, taking 3 of 4 sets. Each set tightly contested, the Royals proved to have the Blues number in converting on critical points.

Saturday's match-up was another tightly contested affair going the five-set distance with each team putting together scoring runs and forcing opponent errors.

The teams would trade winning sets thoughout the contest, neither team surrendering control of the match. The fourth set broke the game open for the Royals as offensive runs spurred by 2nd year outside hitter Jacey Neid and rookie outside hitter Sienna Mastromonaco vaulted the team to a 25-12 victory.

With the momentum squarely on their side, the Royals continued the attack to claim the 5th set 15-11.

The weekend was invaluable for the younger Royals as Head Coach Jeff Ross found some court time for his first year athletes.

"At the end of the day we're trying to grow each person on the team, and I think it's really important that they get match experience and be able to play in games where they learn and grow as athletes. Whether it's a positive or negative experience, they still learn and grow, and become hungry for more." said Ross.

Douglas is now tied for first in the PACWEST standings with VIU and UFV for four points. The Royals next home game will be on November 1st, when they take Vancouver Island.
