In a game certainly not shy of controversy, the Douglas College Royals men's soccer team played the Capilano University Blues in what ended up being a battle of the fittest.
Heading into Sunday afternoon, the Royals were just one point behind both Capilano and Vancouver Island for first place in the PACWEST conference and came fresh off a 1-0 win over Langara College on Saturday, so things looked to be heading in the right direction.
The first half contained plenty of chances for both teams to get on the score board, both the Royals and the Blues offence combined to shoot a total of 23 of the game's total 36 shots in the first half.
The first forty-five minutes of this game however was scoreless, but the same cannot be said for the second half.
In the sixty-third minute, third year Royals forward Taylor Richardson found the back of the net for the first time this season giving Douglas College the 1-0 lead.
As the second half went on, the intensity of the game seemed to pick up as both teams ended up getting handed yellow cards.
Ultimately within the last fifteen minutes of the game, Royals goaltender Felipe Domingos who had been playing great throughout this contest, recieved his second yellow card of the game, therefore giving the Blues a penalty kick.
The Blues took advantage, as third year player Adrian Sahagun scored his 6th goal of the season tying the game up at one all.
Unfortunately for the royals, the blues scoring would not stop there as this time it was within the second minute of extra time that first-year midfielder Peter Alexandrakis would score his first goal of the season, sealing the blues their third win of the season and a tie for first place in the PACWEST Conference.
A well-played game but a disappointing outcome for the Royals as they suffer their third loss of the season, and are now four points behind both Capilano and Vancouver Island.
The Royals will however, have their chance at redemption this Saturday as they visit Vancouver Island in a game that could potentially bring them back into contention atop of the PACWEST standings.
The Royals currently sit in third place with a record of 2-3-1 with seven points.
