Royals lead conference heading into last 2 games

On Sunday, the Royals women proved once again that they are strong contenders for the PACWEST title this season after a commanding 5-3 win over the Blues, breaking Capilano's undefeated streak to hand them their first loss of the season. The win improves Douglas' record to 5-1-1 and places them at first in the conference with a total of 16 points and 2 games left to play in the regular season.

Noteworthy:

  • 4th year forward Martina Pettenon played a strong offensive game against the Blues, tallying 2 goals including the reassurance goal to put the Royals up by 3 late during the 81st minute, which dimmed any chances of a Blues comeback.
  • Forwards Alicia Skirzyk and Jessica Parks also contributed to the scoresheet with a goal each- their second time against the Blues this season.
  • Veteran defender Preet Thandi made her presence known during the game in the 55th minute with a highlight reel play, breaking past 4 Blues players from midfield to the net and scoring the first goal of her collegiate career.

With the win, the Royals move back up to 4th place in this week's CCAA rankings and remain undefeated at home.

Against VIU:

  • The Mariners have yet to score a single goal against the Royals this season as Douglas has cemented 2 straight clean sheet wins against them.
  • VIU enters Saturday's matchup with a 2-3-1 record and a game in hand after a 4-1 win over the Langara Falcons last weekend. They are currently ranked 3rd in the PACWEST conference with 7 points.

Against Langara:

  • The Royals have beaten the Falcons both times this season with dominant 3-goal margins, their latest being a clean sheet (3-0) at home.
  • The Falcons will come into the match bringing their best efforts to claim their first win, and the Royals need to bring an equally strong game to finish their regular season on a strong note in the attempt to clinch the first spot in the conference.

This weekend's matchups are crucial in determining the final seeding for the PACWEST championships set for October 30-31 with 6 points up for grabs. The Royals women will host the VIU Mariners on Saturday Oct. 23 at 1pm for their last home game and finish their regular season visiting the Langara Falcons on Sunday Oct. 24.
