The Douglas College Royals are proud recipients of the ViaSport BC Athlete Assistance Program (BC AAP) scholarship. This scholarship offers financial support to high-performance athletes in British Columbia, enabling them to train and compete at national and international levels. The two recipients for this year are Matt Miller and Kate Hourihane.
A Bachelor of Physical Education student heading into his 4th year, Matt Miller is the starting goalkeeper for the Douglas College Royals Men’s Soccer team. He was a key contributor to the 2023 national championship team, starting six games during the PACWEST regular season and the PACWEST championship final.
“Being a recipient of this AAP scholarship has allowed me to pursue my academic and athletic dreams without the burden of financial stress,” said Matt Miller. “I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to represent my school and grow both as a student and an athlete.”
Kate Hourihane is a right-handed pitcher and first baseman for the Douglas College Royals softball team. She currently holds a 3.92 GPA and is pursuing her Associate of Science degree. She is a leader on the softball team and was named to the NWAC First Team as a pitcher in 2025.
“Receiving an athletic scholarship has given me the chance to excel in both my studies and sports without worrying about financial constraints,” said Kate Hourihane. “Being a softball student-athlete, there is a lot of travel involved playing American colleges, and I am deeply appreciative of the support that allows me to represent my school and develop my skills as a student-athlete.”
