This years Royals women's curling team are now back-to-back CCAA National Champions after a spectacular 10-1 gold medal victory against the Humber Hawks.
Kayla MacMillan, Sarah Loken, and Patty Wallingham were all named CCAA first team all-stars and Royals coach Daniel Wenzek received the Curling Canada coaching award.
The Royals journey to the championship began in the round-robin stage of the tournament as they split the first two games, defeating Nait Ooks 5-2 and conceding a close 9-8 matchup to the Red Deer Queens.
The Royals would then go on to take the remaining five games of the round-robin stage, including a remarkable 9-7 comeback victory against the Sault Cougars, where the Royals fought back from a six point deficit at the end of the 7th .
This led to the Royals securing the first seed in the playoffs.
The Royals semi-final matchup was against the Red Deer Queens, where they avenged their only loss of the tournament, defeating them 7-4.
The gold medal matchup then saw the Royals take on the second seed Humber Hawks.
Douglas would waste no time getting off to a good start as they led 3-0 at the end of the first.
Although the Hawks got on the scoreboard in the second, the Royals momentum then accelerated as the would score seven unanswered, securing their second CCAA gold medal, taking the game 10-1 at the end of the sixth.
This is a historical benchmark for Douglas College as Sunday's win marks the first time the Royals have won back to back CCAA National Championships in any sport.
