The Douglas college Men's Baseball team sits at .500 after a series split with the Skagit Valley College Cardinals over the weekend.
Game one on Saturday saw the Royals lose a heartbreaker on the road in 13 innings, 1-0. It was an absolute pitcher's duel in this one, with Douglas ace Kyle Stubbins going six scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and striking out 13, lowering his ERA to 2.46. Wyatt Versluis came into relieve Stubbins in the seventh, going six innings striking out 8 but gave up a 13th inning double that proved to be costly. Skagit ace Kade Mechals went seven innings, giving up just one hit while striking out 15 Douglas hitters.
Game two of the doubleheader saw the Douglas bats come alive with a 5-4 win. Outfielder Andrew Evernden led the way at the dish going 2 for 3 with two RBI's. Liam Mitchell went 5.2 innings on the mound giving up just two runs. Left fielder Jake Macdonald also had a solid day at the plate going 2 for 4 with a double. Derrick Pecht got the win in relief for Douglas, going 3.1 innings giving up just one run while striking out three.
Game three on Sunday would be back at home at Whalley Stadium for the Royals. Errors proved to be costly for Douglas as they were blanked by Skagit, 6-0. Barry Caine went six innings on the mound for the Royals giving up five unearned runs. Kieran Waters had a solid day offensively, going 3 for 3.
Game four would be the best offensive performance of the weekend for Douglas. The Royals secured the series split with an 8-5 win at home. Jake Macdonald had another productive day at the plate, going 2 for 4 with two RBI's. Third basemen Matteo Porcellato went 3 for 4 on the day with a double. Colton Tuka got the win after going 5.2 innings while giving up four earned runs. Derrick Pecht got the save, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings giving up just one hit.
Douglas currently sits in a four team tie for third place with a 6 and 6 record. They will take on the first place Edmonds Tritons in a four-game set that will begin on Friday on the road at Triton Field.
